Certified Copies of a Vital Record
If a death, marriage, or birth took place in Stratford, NJ, you may submit an application to obtain a certified raised seal copy of the record from us either in person or by mail.
If the record is for yourself, you must be over 18 years of age, otherwise the parent listed on the record can apply for the record. If the mother is applying and her ID does not list her maiden name, she must provide a copy of her marriage certificate to prove her legal name change.
Siblings, children, legal guardians or executor/executrix (for death records) may obtain the record as well, provided they can supply documentation that they are eligible to receive the record. Please call our office for further questions about necessary documentation.

We do NOT accept checks for Certified Copies. Payments can be made by either cash or money order.

In Person Requirements:
- Proper identification – most common is a valid photo driver’s license showing your current address.
- If your name has changed as a result of marriage, please provide proper proof of name change (ie: marriage certificate or divorce decree)
- If you do not have a photo ID you may also supply two forms of non-photo ID such as utility bills, insurance documents, pay stubs, etc. (something showing your name and address).
- Completed application (or be prepared to fill out application)
- Cash or money order payment
Please note: In person applications are processed while you wait. Typically, the request takes about 5-10 minutes
By Mail Requirements:
- A copy of proper identification – most common is a valid photo driver’s license showing your current mailing address.
- If your name has changed as a result of marriage, please provide proper proof of name change (ie: copy of marriage certificate or divorce decree)
- If you do not have a photo ID, or the current mailing address is not the address on your ID, you may also supply copies of two forms of non-photo ID such as utility bills, insurance documents, pay stubs, etc. (something showing your name and address).
- Completed application
- A self addressed stamped envelope to return the document must be included as well.
- Money order in the proper amount
Please note: Mail in applications are processed the same day they are received.
Marriage Licenses
If you are a resident of Stratford looking to get married in any municipality in New Jersey OR if you live out of state and are looking to get married in Stratford, you, along with your future spouse, must come to our office to apply for a marriage license.
Requirements:
- Current, valid government issued ID’s
- Proof of residency (an ID showing your current address will satisfy this requirement)
- $28.00 payment
- Witness over the age of 18
Please note: if this is not your first marriage/civil union, you may need information from divorce decrees. We suggest bringing paperwork with you.
Marriage license applications require 72 hours to process. Once the license is issued, it is only valid for 30 days and only in New Jersey.
No appointments required.
